What Is Viton Material?

Viton is the trademarked name of a group of fluoroelastomers or synthetic rubber materials that contain fluorine. The various types of Viton have different fluorine content, composition and applications, according to its maker, DuPont.

  1. Differences

    • Viton materials vary in their flexibility and ability to remain impermeable at extreme temperatures, as well as their resistance to caustic substances and other chemicals. Viton products range from those suitable for general use to those designed for specialized uses in extreme environments.

    Uses

    • Viton products seal fuels and lubricants, inorganic acids and hydrocarbons. These products include gaskets, seals, hoses and nozzles used in the chemical, automotive, aerospace and petroleum industries.

    History

    • DuPont introduced Viton in 1957 as the first commercial fluoroelastomer. Other companies also make fluorocarbon-based synthetic rubbers. The generic name for this type of synthetic rubber is FKM.
