ATA 100 drives, also known as parallel ATA 100 drives, are an updated version of the ATA 66 hard disk drive. The ATA 100 disk drive allows for a data transfer rate of up to 100 megabytes per second. Data is transferred from the ATA 100 disk drive to the motherboard using an ATA data cable ribbon, which allows for both a slave drive and a master drive to be connected to the controller.

The ATA hard disk drive was first created in the 1980s by a collective group of hardware and software manufactures. The ATA disk drives use a combination of IBM PC/AT technology and use the same interface as IDE drives.

Types

There have been numerous types of ATA disk drives created over the years. The original ATA disk drive, also called a standard IDE, incorporated a 16-bit interface and allowed for PIO modes 0, 1 and 2. Updated versions of the ATA disk drives, which allow for increased data transfer rates, include the ATA-2, ATA-3, ultra-ATA drives, ATA-66 and ATA-100.
