Government Funding for Families

The United States government has different kinds of assistance available for families in need. This assistance allows them to survive and get back on their feet. Some families receive funding that allows them to buy food and other necessities while other types of assistance allow them to heat their homes or receive medical care at low to no cost.

  1. TANF

    • TANF stands for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. This type of assistance gives needy families funds so they can buy basic necessities such as food and other items. TANF's goals include helping families become self-sufficient so that they no longer need assistance.

    LIHEAP

    • The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, also known as LIHEAP, helps needy families pay their power bills. According to the Administration for Children & Families, most of their funding goes to heating homes in the winter rather than cooling them in the summer. Without proper heating units provided by LIHEAP, families in need often resort to hazardous methods of heating homes such as stoves and fireplaces.

    Medicaid

    • Some low-income families receive Medicaid as a type of medical insurance. Medicaid regulations vary by state, but it covers medical costs for those in need. The program sends payments directly to health providers for care received by eligible individuals. Medicaid is available to people who are low income and have few resources or financial assets. Eligibility for Medicaid varies depending on each person's situation and is more easily obtained for children and elderly people, as well as those who are disabled.
