Criteria for Dental Radiography

Criteria for Dental Radiography thumbnail
Dental radiography involves analyzing dental X-rays.

Dental radiography is the examination of dental X-rays in order to analyze and prescribe treatment for a dental care patient. People who work in this field are called radiologic technicians.

  1. Description

    • Radiologic technicians take both intra-oral and extra-oral X-rays in order to view the teeth, gums and jaw thoroughly. It is important to take precautions against radiation damage both for the technician and the patient. Lead shields are used to prevent exposure to radiation. Many dental offices are moving to digital radiography, which produces faster results and emits less radiation.

    Education

    • A career in dental radiography requires completion of a certificate program at minimum, but depending on the employer can require up to a bachelor's degree. The certificate program in radiology typically takes 21 to 24 months to complete and must be from an accredited school. Most states require technicians to be licensed as well, further ensuring the safety of patients.

    Careers

    • Job opportunities in dental radiography and other radiologic fields are growing faster than most careers. Training on other radiological equipment is essential in a job search. According to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary in 2009 was $52,210.
