Minivans are popular for large families or with those having to carry cargo because of their roomy interiors. Their flexibility means they can switch between carrying lots of passengers or lots of baggage. Gas mileage depends on the make and model.

Mazda 5

As of September 2010, the Fuel Economy government website shows the Mazda 5 as having the highest miles per gallon for highway driving at 28, with 22 in the city. This is for a 4-cylinder, 3.8 liter engine with automatic 5-speed transmission.

Toyota Sienna 4WD

The least fuel-efficient minivan is the Toyota Sienna, 4-wheel drive model, which gets 21 on the highway and 21 in the city. This is for the 6-cylinder, 3.5 L engine with an automatic 5-speed transmission.

Chrysler Town and Country

An example of a domestic model is the Chrysler Town and Country, which gets 17 in the city and 25 on the highway. This is for the 6-cylinder, 4 L engine with an automatic 6-speed transmission.
