How to Compare Ergo Baby Carriers
ERGObaby carriers spread the weight of the child over the back and create less strain on the parent's back and shoulders. These carriers, which support the child in an correct ergonomic position, come in several styles.
-
Original
-
The Original Carrier (New Generation II) is 100 percent cotton and features adjustable, padded shoulder straps and waist belt. The waist belt adjusts to as small as 25 inches. The sleeping hood is elasticized and stuffs into a pocket for storage. The carrier has a darted pouch and reinforced buckles with elastic safety loops. The shoulder straps are curved to fit comfortably and feature elastic at the end of the straps to roll up excess length. The carrier has a pocket with zippered access from the side. The chest strap adjusts and can be tightened to keep it stationary on the shoulder straps.
Organic
-
The Organic carrier, similar to the Original but made from organic Cotton, may appeal to those seeking an earth-friendly way to carry their child. The Sport and Performance styles contain polyester, nylon and Lycra, which may be undesirable to some buyers. The Organic style also comes in a wider variety of colors.
-
Sport
-
The Sport Carrier is a polyester/cotton blend and has a built-in vent designed to keep both baby-wearer and baby cooler. The Sport style also has a detachable hood that stores in a velcro pocket and features waist and shoulder straps that extend farther than the original to accommodate larger wearers.
Performance
-
Like the Sport style, the Performance Carrier has longer waist and shoulder straps and a detachable hood, but it also features a polyester outer layer that provides greater durability, a mesh inner lining for added breathability, a cooling panel to wick moisture away from the wearers body. The Performance carrier is one-third lighter than the Original and has contoured shoulder straps that make it ideal for parents with active lifestyles.
Older Generations
-
As of 2010, ERGO has produced three generations of the Original ERGO carrierThe Classic Ergo carrier pouch is created by the length of the fabric; it is not darted. It has a flat, triangular hood that stores in an elastic pocket and connects to the carrier with velcro that slides through D-rings. The hood extension kit is purchased separately. It also has tension lock buckles rather than side release buckles, and the chest strap cannot be made stationary. The Classic carrier only adjusts down to 27 inches in the waist.
The New Generation I carrier is similar to the New Generation II. The only differences are that the adjustable hood does not contain elastic and connects via snaps around D-rings and the shoulders and waist do not have elastic to secure the excess strap when adjusted.
