What Is Face Recognition Software?

Facial recognition software is a form of biometric security. Still in development as of 2010, new innovations such as 3-D imaging are helping to improve its effectiveness and accuracy.

    Uses

    • Facial recognition software is used for security purposes. Casinos use it to monitor people on the casino floor and receive an alert when someone flagged in their database is found. Police and security services use it to scan faces in crowds, searching for known security risks.

    Considerations

    • Facial recognition software is not always accurate. Differences in lighting and in facial expression can cause the software to fail to recognize a person in its database, according to "Biometrics."
