How to Compare GPS Navigation Systems
It's common to use a GPS system to find your way on the road, but with a variety of manufacturers and systems, it can be difficult to choose one. There are a few important points to examine when comparing GPS systems.
-
Interface
-
Having a GPS at your disposal won't mean much if you can't use it easily enough. Make sure to look at screen size: Is it big enough that you can easily see the map? Does the unit speak directions aloud, or does it force you to look at the screen? A touch screen is a good feature to look for because it allows ease of entering information into the system.
Map Content Quality
-
Examine the maps contained in the system. Some systems come preloaded with only the lower 48 states, while others feature all 50. Some also feature Canada and American island territories. Also, check map accuracy for new roads or landmarks that you may be aware of.
-
Speed and Route Calculation
-
Take a test drive with all the systems you might want, and see if they direct you on routes that are the most direct and make the most sense. Check how fast the system recalculates a route if you miss a turn. The best systems take only a second or two.
