Epsom Salt & Hemorrhoids

Epsom salts are every bit as versatile as baking soda. The salts can be used for cleaning purposes, drawing splinters out of your foot, and exfoliating your skin, but they can also sooth painful hemorrhoids.

  1. Contents

    • Epsom salts contain magnesium and sulfates, which both have medicinal properties. Magnesium will help reduce inflammation, and sulfates also ease pain. Hemorrhoids get particularly painful when they are swollen and inflamed.

    Heat Pack

    • Soak a flannel pack in a solution of Epsom salts (two cups per quart of water). Heat the pack and then apply it to the lower area of your back. This will help relieve hemorrhoid pain, according to the EdgarCayce.org.

    Sitz Bath or bathtub

    • Sit in a sitz bath or in the bathtub filled with warm or hot water. Add Epsom salts to the bath. If you are in the tub, lie back, pull your knees up and try to relax.

    Results

    • The warm water and Epsom salts will lessen the pain while increasing blood flow to your anus, thus helping to shrink the swollen veins in the hemorrhoids.

    Experiment

    • Experiment with the Epsom salts. Start with a little bit and then add more until you start feeling some relief. But keep Epsom salts away from wounds or scratches, advises Life123.com.
