No two people get the same mileage out of the tires on their Harley-Davidsons. A rider can expect anywhere from 5,000 to 12,000 miles, though some riders have reported getting as 30,000 miles on a tire. Many variables affect tire wear.

  1. Composition

    • The various brands of tires are made from different compositions. A softer tire will wear at a different rate than a harder one.

    Maintenance

    • It's important to check the air pressure in the tires. For stock tires, see the motorcycle owner's manual. If the tires aren't the original tires supplied with the motorcycle or you don't have the manual, the maximum suggested pressure is stamped onto the side of the tire.

    Weight

    • The weight of the motorcycle, the number of people riding the motorcycle and the amount of luggage affect wear on a motorcycle tire.

    Driving habits

    • Faster acceleration and faster stops will wear tires quicker than smooth operation. City driving, with more acceleration and stopping, will result in more wear.

    Road surface

    • The road's surface has a bearing on tire wear. Smooth surfaces are gentler on tires than rough surfaces.
