Working in a sheet metal shop can be a physically demanding job and requires careful attention to safety procedures. Cuts, back injury and repetitive motion injuries can be avoided by using safe work practices.

Work Environment

The sheet metal shop is an area that should have adequate lighting and proper ventilation. This is extremely important when the shop space is small. If any fumes will be present, the worker should wear a respirator and safety glasses.
Physical Injuries

Working with sheet metal involves tasks that use the same physical motions over and over. Workers should be rotated between different jobs to prevent repetitive motion injuries. Sheet metal edges can be extremely sharp, so workers should wear gloves to protect their hands from cuts.

Machinery

Any machinery in the shop should be used with caution and carefully examined before use. If a machine is damaged, it should be locked out and not used until repaired. When working, do not wear baggy clothing, jewelry or long hair. These can get caught in moving parts.
Lifting

Sheet metal can be extremely heavy to move and manipulate. When lifting, get the help of a coworker or use machinery that can lift it for you. You should lift with your legs and keep your back in a straight position. This will reduce the chance of injury to your lower back.
Fitness

The sheet metal worker should maintain strong physical health. Working in a shop involves standing for long periods, bending, lifting and crawling in cramped areas. Keep the work surface you are using nearby and at a comfortable level.
