Percentage of Alcohol in American Beer

American beers come in a range of variety and flavors. Domestic favorites include everything from dark, thick brews to light, low-calorie beverages like Bud Light. In addition to the differences in taste, American beers have different amounts of alcohol. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Types

    • There are hundreds of brands of American beers. Some of the most popular include Budweiser, Coors, Miller, Michelob and Yuengling.

    Light Beers

    • A light American beer, such as Coors or Bud Light, has about 4.2 percent alcohol. The regular version of those beers has about 5 percent alcohol.

    Lager Beers

    • Traditional lager-style beers, such as Yuengling or Sam Adams, typically have between 4.4 and 5 percent alcohol.

    Ice Beers

    • Beers brewed to have a higher-than-average alcohol content are often called "ice" beers. For example, Busch Ice has about 5.9 percent alcohol. Mickey's, another domestic brewer, makes an ice beer that has nearly 6 percent alcohol.

    Craft Beers

    • Micro brews, which are made at craft brew houses, often pack a high amount of alcohol along with their distinctive taste. For example, Marin Brewing makes an Old Dipsea Barleywine that has 9 percent alcohol and Red Hook's India Pale Ale has 6.5 percent alcohol.
