What Is Considered Business Professional Attire?

Professional business attire plays an important part of how you are perceived in the workplace. You do not want your wardrobe to be the most memorable thing about you. Proper attire shows professionalism, respect, authority and the desire to succeed.

  1. Suiting

    • Choose suits in black, navy, gray or one of these colors in a pinstripe. Make sure you are able to move around easily in the suit but that it is not too large for your frame. Wear skirts that hit at the knee and pants that do not drag on the ground.

    Shirts

    • Shirts need to fit well and not sag on the body or fit too tight. Button shirts all the way to the top, and wear colors like blue or white, with or without stripes.

    Shoes

    • You need one good pair of work shoes that are clean, blemish free and dark in color. Women should not wear tall, stiletto heels or anything open-toed. Avoid shoes with accents like buckles, bows or noticeable patterns.

    Accessories

    • Keep accessories to a minimum. Do not layer jewelry or carry flashy or brightly colored purses, briefcases or wallets. While ties can be a way to put color into your wardrobe, use discretion and avoid overly bright colors, patterns and any character themes.

    Hair and Makeup

    • Hair should be kept tidy and clean. Do not dye your hair with an unnatural color, and avoid quirky hairstyles that have many layers and uneven edges. If you wear makeup, keep it natural and smooth.
