Side Effects of Pulsed Dye Laser Treatment for Rosacea
Rosacea is a problematic skin condition characterized by flare-ups of redness and ruddiness in the face. Johns Hopkins Cosmetic Center reports that pulsed dye laser (PDL) treatment is optimal for treating rosacea. However, there are possible side effects. Does this Spark an idea?

Significance
-
There is no cure for rosacea and its cause is unknown, but it is important for patients to effectively treat its symptoms. If rosacea is left untreated, bumps and pimples may develop. In severe conditions, the nose may swell up from excess tissue.
Features
-
PDL treatment uses high-energy lasers to target and dissolve the abnormal blood vessels beneath the skin's surface, triggering healthy cell functionality and new cell growth. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) reports that a recent study showed that one treatment improved rosacea redness by 40 percent to 60 percent in patients.

Bruising and Swelling
-
John Hopkins Cosmetic Center cites bruising as the most common side effect, and says the bruising after PDL treatment lasts from seven to 14 days. Swelling should subside within a couple of days, and applying ice packs will speed healing.
Discoloration
-
Temporary discoloration and/or excessive redness (worse than the initial condition) may occur, but these should subside within a few days after treatment. Hyperpigmentation (dark spots) or hypopigmentation (white spots), however, are complications that require additional treatment.
Crusting and Dryness
-
The treated skin may crust and flake off as it heals, especially after intensive treatment to correct broken blood vessels. Moisturizing the area with a natural moisturizer, such as aloe vera gel, is important. Abrasive cleansers should be avoided.
Prevention/Solution
-
Sunscreen is extremely important, as laser-treated skin is substantially more sensitive to sun exposure. Sun exposure on unprotected or ill-protected skin after PDL treatment could cause or worsen discoloration and dryness and thwart the healing process.
