What Bacterial Infections Could Cause Skin Problems?

Many bacterial infections could cause skin problems. Here are some common ones.

  1. Cellulitis

    • A streptococcal or staphylococcal infection of a wound usually causes cellulitis, which most often occurs on the legs. Usually, the first sign is a small injury or infection between the toes. Possible symptoms include swelling, tenderness, warm skin, bruising, blisters, fever, and headache.

    Folliculitis, Boils, and Carbuncles

    • Bacterial infection can cause folliculitis, which is the inflammation of hair follicles. Tender, swollen areas called boils can develop around inflamed hair follicles. Carbuncles are clusters of boils.

    Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome

    • A defining symptom of staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome is peeling skin. Other common symptoms include a crusted, red, painful infection site, blistering, fever, chills, weakness, and fluid loss. Infants, young children, and persons with depressed immunity are most susceptible.

    Erysipelas

    • Hemolytic streptococci cause erysipelas. Symptoms may include a shiny, red, raised rash; small blisters; and enlarged, tender lymph nodes.

    Erythrasma

    • Erythrasma is caused by corynebacterium minutissimum. It is more common in the tropics and occurs mostly in adults and persons with diabetes. Areas of the body where skin touches skin, such as under the breast and in the groin area, are most prone to erythrasma. Symptoms may include irregular pink patches that turn into brown scales.

    Impetigo

    • Impetigo is a staphylococci infection that causes pus-filled blisters ranging in size from peas to large rings. Impetigo tends to occur on the face, arms, or legs.
