About Yoga Mats
Ancient yogis most certainly did not use the modern sticky yoga mat made almost mandatory in today's yoga studios. However, a good yoga mat can deepen your postures and enhance your practice.

Why Use a Yoga Mat?
-
Yoga mats are most commonly made of materials that allow the yoga practitioner to have firm traction with their hands and/or feet. This traction allows yogis to maintain better balance, find proper alignment and go deeper into a pose.
Types of Mats
-
Yoga mats come in different thicknesses and lengths to accommodate different body types. Many companies market "eco mats." These mats are typically made out of natural materials--rubber as opposed to PVC. However, be ready to pay more for this type of mat.
-
What Kind of Mat is Right for You?
-
Although yoga mats vary widely in color and design, there is not much difference between brands of yoga mats, and the choice of a mat won't affect your practice to a great degree. However, yoga practitioners suffering from joint injuries or sensitivity should consider one of the many extra-thick mats on the market.
Care and Cleaning
-
Although special mat cleaners are available, yoga mats can be cleaned with a simple solution of dish or hand soap and water, and left unrolled to air-dry.
When to Replace a Yoga Mat
-
If your mat starts to fray or disintegrate or if the surface no longer allows you to get a good grip and feel steady in a pose, it's time to consider buying a new yoga mat.
