Why Do Ears Pulse?

There can be several causes of a pulsing sound in the ear--or simply the sensation of feeling your own pulse--including vascular causes, infections and temporary conditions.Only an otolaryngologist (an ear, nose and throat doctor) can diagnose the problem with certainty.

Pulsatile Tinnitus

Pulsatile tinnitus is caused by several things, including vascular abnormalities and small spasms. Treatment varies by cause.

Chronic Inflamation

An infection in the middle ear causes swelling, which increases blood flow to the area, causing the pulse. The treatment is antibiotics.

Effusion

If water or another fluid collects behind the eardrum, this can cause a pulsing sensation. Effusion often results in infection. Treatments include decongestants.

Thyroid

Thyroid problems, or temporary abnormalities (such as occur in pregnant women or people with anemia) can increase blood flow through the jugular vein, which passes near the auditory nerve, causing the pulse. Treatment is for thyroid conditions.

Exertion

Increased circulation during such extraordinary activity as shoveling snow may cause a temporary pulsing in the ear. The body can be unaccustomed to this exercise, as it can be to jogging or vigorous walking.
