RSD Disease

RSD disease, otherwise known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy or complex regional pain syndrome, is a chronic pain condition, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). RSD disease has no cure. The disease usually affects adults between the ages of 40 and 60, but it can also affect children.

Symptoms

The main symptom of RSD disease is intense spreading pain in a person's arm or leg after suffering an injury, according to NINDS. Other symptoms include change in skin temperature, sweating, swelling and color changes.

Types

Type I RSD disease is when the damaged nerve cannot be identified immediately. Type II RSD disease is when clear major nerve injury has occurred, according to the Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Association.

Treatment

Symptoms associated with RSD disease can be relieved. According to NINDS, doctors can give patients analgesics, corticosteroids, antidepressants and opioids to help dull the pain associated with RSD disease.

Prognosis

Prognosis for RSD disease varies among patients. Some patients have remission from symptoms while others have intense pain throughout their life regardless of treatment, according to NINDS.

Risks & Causes

According to the Neurology Channel, risk factors and possible causes for RSD disease include cerebral lesions, trauma such as bone fracture, surgery, spinal cord disorders, repetitive motion disorder, paralysis, heart disease, infection or heart attack.
