The History of African Instruments

The history of African musical instruments is as rich and diverse as the people that populate the African continent. Artistic displays of color and symbols were created to illustrate the instrument's use and, often, the occasion on which it was played.

  1. The Drum

    • Drums were made primarily out of wood, with the covering constructed of animal hide and plant fiber; these instruments were used for celebrating weddings, funerals and other special occasions.

    Gong and Gong Beaters

    • Wood gong beaters and iron gongs were originally used by predominately male members to facilitate organizational meetings.

    Sistrum or Wood Gourd

    • The sistrum was played in ceremonies welcoming youth into associations that fostered learning.

    Wood Trumpet

    • Used in professional associations, trumpets were sounded to celebrate promotions or status advancements within that organization.

    Bells

    • Made of iron, copper and other metal alloys, bells were often worn in battle for protection and to create fear in the enemy.

    Harps

    • Typically made of hide, metal and wood, harps were played for entertainment and to liven up group gatherings.
