Migraine Myths

People who suffer from migraines are referred to as migraineurs. Famous migraineurs include artist Claude Monet, Princess Margaret and Super Bowl XXXII MVP Terrell Davis. One of the miserable things about migraines is that many nonmigraineurs believe in migraine myths. Finding someone to take your migraines seriously can be difficult.

  1. Existence

    • Many people believe that migraineurs are faking their pain in order to dodge responsibilities. The World Health Organization not only recognizes that migraines exist but lists migraines as a "global calamity."

    Types

    • There isn't just one type of migraine. There are numerous types, including classic migraines, menstrual migraines, ocular migraines, silent migraines and abdominal migraines.

    Not Lethal

    • Another myth is that a migraine can't kill you. According to MAGNUM, The National Migraine Association, migraines have been known to induce strokes and coma.

    Doctor Knowledge

    • Sadly, many doctors and nurses cannot recognize that their patients have migraines. Migraines can be misdiagnosed as depression, sinus problems or tinnitus.

    Futility

    • Another myth is that there is that migraines are incurable. With a combination of behavior modification and medication, many migraineurs find relief.
