What Are the Treatments for a Rib Muscle Injury?

Rib injuries are painful and make it uncomfortable to move. They can be caused by an impact to the ribs, sports, coughing, vomiting, and other activities. Most rib injuries heal with time, but those suffering from one can become more comfortable with treatment.

  1. How Do I Know How to Treat a Rib Injury?

    • An orthopedist will look at your ribs, take x-rays, a CAT scan or an MRI and identify the extent of your injury. Then, he can recommend treatment.

    At-Home Treatment

    • Cold packs, Ibuprofen or aspirin can relax the muscles and reduce the pain. A warm bath can also relieve discomfort. Creams that generate heat may relieve pain and loosen the muscles.

    Is Physical Activity Permitted?

    • If your ribs are fractured, resting the muscles will be prescribed. A physician may allow some activity with bruised ribs, but resting the muscles may also be recommended depending on the extent of your injury.

    Other Treatment

    • Bruised and fractured ribs often require physical therapy. A therapist will teach the patient stretches and breathing exercises to help the muscles regain resilience and loosen.

    Severe Rib Injuries

    • Very severe injuries may require hospital stays, nerve blockers or epidurals.
