A cholesterol test is a quick, painless blood test to determine your cholesterol count. Here are a few tips to get the most accurate results.

  1. Type of Test

    • Your doctor may choose to test just your total cholesterol or run a complete lipid profile, which will indicate separately your LDL ("bad" cholesterol), HDL ("good" cholesterol), triglycerides and total cholesterol.

    Fasting Time

    • Fasting for 12 hours prior to your blood test is advised. If fasting isn't possible, tell your doctor. Depending on the results, the doctor may require a second test.

    Fasting Details

    • During the fasting period, no food or liquid (other than water) is allowed. Some medications may also affect the results, but it is best to ask your doctor for advice on postponing medication.

    Diet

    • Eating low-cholesterol foods is advised as a general rule. Eat your normal diet prior to your fasting period; however, if you eat something particularly high in cholesterol, such as a steak, tell your doctor.

    Alcohol

    • Alcohol may increase triglyceride counts, so refrain from drinking alcohol for a full 24 hours prior to the test.

    Stress

    • Stress and infection are thought to impact the test results, so if you are not feeling well, mention this to your doctor ahead of time or during your appointment.
