Types of Labrador Dogs
Labrador retrievers are one of the most popular breeds of dog in the United States. These dogs are known for their good temperament and intelligence. They are generally very loyal and easily trained, making them an excellent family pet. There are two classifications of Labradors, as well as three distinct types within each of these classes. However, the differences in type are only skin (or fur) deep, as the dogs are all remarkably similar in disposition.

English vs. American

The two main classifications of Labrador Retriever are English and American. English dogs are stockier and thicker across the chest, while American Retrievers are taller and have a thinner build.
Chocolate

Chocolate Labradors are defined by their rich brown coats. The American Kennel Club also classifies the "silver" Lab as a chocolate variety, though many people argue that it is a Weimaraner cross instead.

Yellow

Yellow Labradors are the most popular type of Labrador Retriever in the United States. It is easy to get them confused with Golden Retrievers, but Yellow Labs have shorter hair. Goldens are not Labradors, and vice versa, though they are both classified as Retrievers.
Black

Black Labradors are identified by their glossy black coats. They are excellent work dogs, and can be used while hunting both as a gun dog and a water dog.
Size

All three types of Labrador Retriever are around the same size. Their average weight is around 50 lbs., though some females can grow much larger. The average height is between 21 and 24 inches.
