Types of Automobile Paint

Detailing and customizing cars is a popular way to make a vehicle unique to its driver, and often involves using automobile paint. In addition, body shops utilize automobile paint to fix blemishes and repair the damage done by collisions and other accidents. There are a variety of automobile paint types available for both customizing and bodywork.

  1. Sealer

    • Sealer is a clear paint used before applying other types of paint. It makes an even surface that paint can easily stick to, and allows for the entire area to obtain an even color and coverage of paint.

    Acrylic Enamel

    • Acrylic enamel is a very durable type of paint that requires only a few coats of application. It dries quickly and comes in a variety of colors.

    Urethane

    • Urethane is another durable paint that requires just a few coats to achieve the right effect, but it usually necessitates the use of a catalyst to make it harden. Urethanes have extremely noxious fumes and can be difficult to work with.

    Acrylic Lacquer

    • Acrylic lacquer is usually the recommended paint for those who are not professionals, because this paint category is the easiest to use. Acrylic lacquer typically only needs to be mixed with thinner, but it does require many coats to complete a job.

    Clear Coat

    • Clear coat is a finishing layer of paint that is used to seal in color and protect paint jobs. It is most often put over metallic paint finishes, and can be used with any automotive paint type.
