What Is a POP Rivet Gun?
A POP® rivet gun is a proprietary tool manufactured by the Emhart Teknologies division of Black & Decker. Its generic form is more correctly called a blind rivet gun, or a blind rivet tool. Both Emhart's trademarked version and other manufacturers of blind rivet technology produce tools that are used to insert blind rivets into pre-drilled holes in two or more sheets of metal or other thin material, in order to fasten them together. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Function
-
Blind rivets are tubular in shape with an arbor fitted in the center. When the handle of the rivet tool is squeezed, the interior jaws clamp down on the arbor and pull it through the barrel of the rivet. This forces it to collapse upon itself.
Benefits
-
The collapsing action of the rivet draws the two pieces of sheet metal together, creating a firm bond.
-
Fun Fact
-
The term "pop" rivet is derived from the sound created when the arbor bursts free from the rivet.
Features
-
The term "blind" rivet is derived from the quality of the rivet to be applied from only one side of the work area, thus being blind to the other side.
Considerations
-
Blind rivet technology allows for the assembly of certain structures by a single person, rather than the two-person crew usually required for standard riveting.
Size
-
Blind rivet guns may be manual or air-powered, commercial grade or consumer grade, and are designed to work with a wide range of sizes of blind rivets.
