What Is a Phone Tree?
The names and numbers that the babysitter needs to know in case of an emergency or illness is an important tool that every parent should make sure is available before they go anywhere. Instead of just a list of this information, writing it down in a way where at a glance a caregiver knows the person to call immediately can save time and panic if something goes wrong.

Significance
-
Although an emergency list for a babysitter is just one example of what a phone tree is, you can see how it's basically a list that starts at the base and works its way outwards if one "branch" cannot be gotten a hold of. It can be tailored to any situation where this system is needed.
Emergency Numbers
-
The first step in making a phone tree is to write down all the emergency numbers that the person watching your children may need to know. This includes your local police emergency line and the poison control center.
-
Your Numbers
-
Write down the numbers where you can be reached. This includes your cell phone numbers, any other person's numbers that you will be visiting and any establishments that you are going to in case you cannot be reached directly.
Other Contacts
-
If for some reason you cannot be reached, the phone tree should branch out to other close relatives and friends that are authorized to take care of your children in your absence. Include their home and cell numbers, home and cell.
Health Care Providers
-
A list of your health care providers and their numbers are also an important addition. If you are not available to be there right away, your children's medical records and history can be relayed through those that see them regularly.
