Why Is My Computer Is Slow at Start Up?

Computer slowdown can occur for many reasons and not only cause inconveniences, but be an indicator of potentially larger problems. If you are experiencing an exceptionally long startup time for your computer, an investigation is in order. Use the following tips to determine the nature of the problem.

  1. Recently Installed Programs or Updates

    • If your slowdown occurred immediately after installing new software or after applying an update, it could have been due to these updates. Try restarting your computer again and see if the problem persists.

    Startup Programs

    • Many programs automatically start when your computer boots up and take time to load, thus slowing down your computer. To disable startup programs, you can simply click the start menu, then click "Run." In the dialogue box that pops up, type "msconfig." In the startup tab you will be able to disable any and all startup programs, but I wouldn't recommend this unless you know what you are doing.

    Hardware Conflicts

    • If you are experiencing slowdown, remove any newly installed hardware and see if this affects the issue.

    Viruses and Spyware

    • Viruses and Spyware can affect the startup time of your computer, as well as the overall operation. If you aren't currently running any virus protection programs, get one immediately; AVG is a good, free option.

    Anti-Virus Conflicts

    • If you are running multiple anti-virus programs on your computer, try removing one of these.
