Online Auctions as an Alternative to eBay

For years, the auction site eBay had a corner on the market, with little competition. As eBay has grown in popularity, alternative online auction sites are popping up all over the Internet. None have seen the degree of success that eBay has, but over time, as disgruntled eBay sellers and buyers unhappy with PayPal (eBay's preferred payment method) continue to pursue alternatives, eBay may take a backseat.

  1. eBid.com

    • Rated number 2 in 2009 by TopTenReview.com and averaging 1.2 million auctions, eBid is a viable alternative to eBay, offering both lower listing and final value fees, and a feedback system for buyers and sellers alike.

    Onlineauction.com

    • Onlineauction.com was founded by Chris Fain, a former auctioneer, whose goal was to provide a fair and cheaper outlet for Internet sellers and buyers. A viable contender, this auction site also offers free listings, with an $8 monthly membership fee.

    Overstock.com

    • Known for their discounted, brand-name merchandise, overstock.com also offers an auction site. Listings are slightly higher, with fees starting at 10 cents, but the site often features discounts and other promotions.

    WeBidz.com

    • The auction site webidz.com requires zero listing and final value fees. The only fee is a $5 registration fee.

    Before You Begin

    • Always check out the forums at online auction sites to get a feel of what other sellers think about the website. Consider how much time is involved in setting up your seller's page.
