A4 Landscape Vs. D Landscape
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) defines A4 paper as 11.69 inches by 8.27 inches in the landscape orientation. This is the European equivalent to U.S. letter-size paper. ISO D paper is 42.91 inches by 30.35 inches, which is equivalent to the Arch E1 (42 inches by 30 inches) used in the United States. In the US, "D" sized paper is either: 34 inches by 22 inches in the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) series, or 36 inches by 24 inches in the architectural paper series. A4 has 11.2 percent of the area of an Architectural D (Arch D) sheet.

ISO paper sizes
-
The European Union uses paper cut to ISO 216 standard sizes. The aspect ratio (width to height) of these sheets is one to the square root of two (approximately 1:1.4142). A4 paper is defined as 210 millimeters by 297 millimeters (8.27 inches by 11.69 inches).
United States Paper Sizes
-
In North America, architectural sheets sizes are based on a 12-inch by 9-inch module. Arch D is 24 inches by 36 inches. ANSI paper sizes are multiples of 8 1/2-inch by 11-inch "letter size" paper. ANSI D measures 34 inches by 22 inches.

Printing and Copying to A4
-
Most office copiers and printers handle A4 paper. Most brands and models of office copiers and computer printers can be adjusted to handle A4 sheets in the portrait format. Larger copiers and printers that can handle 11-inch by 17-inch ledger-size paper can print the A4 landscape format without rotating the image.
Printering and Copying to Arch D Paper
-
A large format plotter printing a photograph. Many large-format printers, plotters and copiers can handle Arch D sized paper. Most large format printers use roll feeds and cut the paper length for each print. The smallest large format printer has a 24-inch roll width and can only print D size sheets in portrait format. But 30-inch and 36-inch wide rolls are more common in architectural offices and at graphic design companies. Even larger printers are often used in service bureaus, print shops and at many universities. Printing on other roll widths beyond 24-inch or 36-inch may require trimming excess paper.
Enlarging or Reducing A4 to Arch D
-
The reduction ratio to print an Arch D sheet on A4 paper is approximately 34.46 percent (this may vary depending on the required margins for your printer). The enlargement ratio to print an A4 sheet on Arch D is approximately 308 percent (again, this may vary).
Landscape Versus Portrait Orientation
-
In landscape orientation, the width of the paper is longer the the height of the sheet (like a typical photograph of a landscape). In portrait orientation, the height is greater then the width. Most business documents and books are printed in portrait orientation. Most large architectural documents are laid out in landscape orientation.
