Geranium For Acne
Geranium oil is an essential oil that is derived from the leaves and flowers of the rose geranium plant. Because of its many beneficial effects, geranium oil is useful for applications that require the treatment of problematic skin characterized by pore blockages, poor circulation and excess sebum secretion. These qualities make it one of the essential oils of choice for treating acne. Does this Spark an idea?

Acne's Cause
-
Doctors like John Kirschmann, author of "Nutrition Almanac," say that acne commonly occurs as a result of the manufacture of excess amounts of sebum, a mixture of waxes and oils, and other substances like keratin. When these substances accumulate to a significant amount, pore blockage results, circulation in the area slows down, blackheads and whiteheads form, and bacterial infection may result. Dr. Kirschmann has described psychological stress as a significant factor contributing to acne, and recommends that treatments for stress be included in acne-management schemes where stress may contribute to the problem.
Geranium Oil
-
Geranium oil is steam-distilled from the flowers and leaves of the rose geranium plant. This essential oil is known in aromatherapy for its effectiveness regarding certain conditions and diseases--one of which is acne. As described by Maria Lis-Balchin, author of "Aromatherapy Science: A Guide for Healthcare Professionals," geranium oil is antiseptic and can be used to cleanse and stimulate the lymphatic, immune and circulatory systems, which can reduce inflammation in areas with acne. The oil is able to normalize excess sebum secretion by restoring normal activity of the sebaceous glands, dealing with one of the main causes of acne. Lastly, geranium oil also has a relaxing effect and can thus be beneficial in cases where stress is a factor in acne.

Application
-
A small amount of pure geranium oil can be added to a larger amount of carrier oils, such as lavender or jojoba, to reduce its strength. The combination can then be applied to problem areas twice a day--once in the morning and once before bedtime.
Effectiveness
-
A blend of geranium oil and carrier oils should be incorporated into a comprehensive acne-control regimen that also involves stress management, exercise to boost circulation and immune function, and the use of other substances such as astringent to cleanse afflicted areas. Such a regimen can result in marked improvement in acne after some weeks, depending on the severity of the condition.
Warnings
-
Like all essential oils, pure geranium oil can burn if applied directly to the skin. Acne sufferers must strictly follow recommendations regarding the proper dilution of pure geranium oil in carrier oils before application. Lis-Balchin says that some references to geranium toxicity exist and are due to contact dermatitis and sensitization--skin reactions due to allergies. Acne sufferers who notice typical symptoms of allergic reactions, such as itching, skin reddening or swelling of the area, should discontinue use of geranium oil immediately and consult a doctor.
