Software engineering by Visual Studio

Visual Studio 6.0 is a suite of Microsoft software development tools and languages, packaged for the Windows environment and Web applications. Some of its components are Visual Basic, Visual C++, Visual J++, Visual InterDev and Visual SourceSafe. With Visual Studio 6.0, released in 1998, Microsoft was able to create a productivity tools kit for software developers. Visual Studio 6.0 has since evolved to Visual Studio 2010 and the development environment moved from COM to the .NET framework.

  1. Components of Visual Studio 6.0

    • Visual Studio 6.0, which followed Visual Studio 97, had two editions: Professional and Enterprise. The Enterprise edition had more features than the Professional edition. The extra features included packages for exploring, managing, modeling and analyzing programs and code. The programming languages and environments were Visual Basic 6.0, Visual C and C++, Visual J++, Visual FoxPro, Visual InterDev and Visual SourceSafe. Visual Studio 6.0 was the last version to use the COM development environment before Microsoft transitioned to the .NET framework environment.

    From COM to .NET Framework

    • The component object model (COM) was introduced in 1993 and advanced the concept that software could be built on small components that can be integrated and be reusable. COM was used in Visual Studio 6.0 and evolved to include other components called OLE and ActiveX. It was replaced by the .NET framework. The .NET framework made it possible to work in any programming language and transfer your code to another language without any rewrite or loss of quality. The .NET framework was used for later versions of Visual Studio.

    Systems Requirements

    • Released in 1998, Visual Studio 6.0 required the Windows 95 operating system or higher and a PC with a Pentium processor, VGA or high-resolution monitor and at least Internet Explorer 4.0. The PC is expected to have a CD-ROM drive. Hard disk space of at least one gigabyte is required to install all the software components in Visual Studio 6.0.

    Visual Studio Programming Languages

    • Visual Basic 6.0 is one of the programming languages in the Visual Studio 6.0 suite. The others are Visual C++ 6.0, Visual J++ 6.0 and Visual FoxPro 6.0. The integrated development environment (IDE) makes it possible to reuse code from one language to another language in the Visual Studio software development kit (SDK). Thus, business solutions can be rapidly developed.

    Visual Studio Development Tools

    • Visual InterDev 6.0 and Visual SourceSafe 6.0 are two of the development tools available in Visual Studio 6.0. With Visual InterDev, one has a Web page authoring system that easily integrates to the Internet. Visual SourceSafe is used for source code management and version control.

    Beyond Visual Studio 6.0

    • After 1998, Visual Studio grew beyond version 6. In 2002, Visual Studio incorporated the .NET framework technology to become Visual Studio.NET, which was continued in the Visual Studio.NET.2003 edition. Visual Studio 2005 and Visual Studio 2008 followed with enhancements of the .NET framework. In 2010, Visual Studio 2010 was released. It is meant to make the development process from design to deployment much easier. The continued use and growth of Visual Studio SDK attests to its usefulness as a developer's productivity platform in the Windows world.
