Facts About Online Safety
As more and more people conduct important business and find entertainment on the Internet, online security is more important than ever. The threats posed by others over the Internet are many, and there is no single solution to dealing with the dangers of Internet use. But by taking a few simple steps, anyone can minimize the risk and have a better online experience.

Threats
-
Several different types of threats exist on the Internet. Viruses, trojans and worms are all programs that users may download unknowingly that will cause problems on their computers. Identity theft involves the unauthorized use of personal information, either from someone accessing an online account or phishing, which involves sending a fraudulent email asking for personal information. Finally, children are at risk of harassment or bullying, or of targeting by sexual predators who may pose as friends in an online social environment like a chat room or a social networking site.
Warning Signs
-
Each type of Internet safety problem has its own warning signs. If you notice unauthorized or unusual charges on a credit card or to a bank account, this may indicate a case of identity theft or online credit card fraud. A suspicious email asking for personal information such as a Social Security number or bank account number may be a sign that you're a target of phishing. Kids who are asked to provide their address, schedule or other personal information anywhere online may be at risk as well.

Prevention
-
Staying safe online is largely a matter of common sense. Protect your personal data by only submitting sensitive information to official organizations with which you are familiar, such as banks or credit card companies. If you receive a suspicious email from one of these institutions, call customer service to make sure that the email is valid. Use passwords that are difficult for others to guess, and never keep your passwords stored in your computer if other people outside of your family use your computer.
Software Solutions
-
Software developers offer some useful tools for ensuring online safety. Most major Web browsers include content filters and alert systems that identify dangerous websites or require you to authorize certain types of downloads to prevent viruses. Antivirus software is useful for identifying and removing malicious programs once they're already on your computer. Be sure to keep all of your software, including your operating system, up to date to make sure you have protection against the latest online threats.
Parental Considerations
-
For parents, the safety of children on the Internet is a major concern. Be sure to talk to your kids about their online behavior. Ask them what sites they visit, and use parental controls to block access to adult-oriented sites. Make sure that your kids know not to give out any personal information online, and spend time using the Internet with your kids to get an idea of their usage habits.
