Tuxedo Vest Styles

When attending an event that requires a tuxedo, men must choose between wearing a cummerbund (which resembles a thicker belt) and a tuxedo vest. While the choice is often merely an aesthetic preference, there are several different options when it comes to the style and color of a tuxedo vest.

    Cuts

  1. Tuxedo vests are available in two cuts: backless or full-back. The full-back option is more standard, featuring multiple buttons on the front and material that covers from the shoulders down to the waist.

In comparison, a backless vest is often a more sharp "V" shape in the front, with two to three buttons most often enclosing the front. The neck comes up and around the back (similar) to a halter style and is often adjustable. The back of the vest, from the neck to the lower back, is completely out, with only a narrow band of fabric around the back.
  2. Full vs. Backless Vests

  3. According to tuxedosdirect.com, the full-back vest is preferred by many men because it helps a jacket hang smoothly on the back. A backless vest does not smooth the back of the shirt; therefore the jacket has a tendency to bunch when worn.

However, when it comes to comfort, backless vests can be less constricting, so this might prove a better option when a tuxedo must be worn all day.

Finally, the full-back tuxedo is the more elegant option for the man who might take his jacket off if the event is particularly warm or lengthy.
  4. Vest Materials

  5. Just as there are options for tuxedo vests styles, men also can choose a fabric for their vest. The first option is microfiber, synthetic fibers that make a lightweight, comfortable fabric.

The chief drawback to microfiber is that it might not appear as expensive as other vest materials, such as silk or satin. Both silk and satin have a lustrous feel that looks soft to the touch.
  6. Wear With

  7. When selecting a jacket style to match your vest, there are many options: Anything from a two-button jacket to even a Mandarin-collar jacket will work, according to tuxedosdirect.com. However, avoid two styles: the double-breasted jacket, which can look too bulky; and a shawl collar, which also adds bulk.
  8. Extras

  9. There are a number of extras that can add to the look of your tuxedo vest. From pockets to no pockets or two to six buttons, vests have many versatile looks. This is particularly true when it comes to the color or even the pattern of a vest. You can choose from a basic black to a bright pink or even a herringbone vest.
