Goal setting is both an art and a science. It allows us to achieve our overall objectives and purposes in life. A goal is the foundation and clarifies benchmarks, defines the daily action plan and helps set a realistic timetable to achieve each goal. A few basic activities, if followed, can lead you to create attainable goals.

Defining The Purpose

  • Define the purpose of a goal with passion and conviction. Write the purpose of each goal on a 3-by-5 inch card and read it aloud daily with the same passion and conviction you first wrote it. The purpose of each goal must be stated in a clear and specific manner. Writing down, "I want more money" is not a goal. Writing "I will earn $100,000 (the goal) for my daughter's kidney surgery (the purpose)" defines the goal and gives it a specific purpose.

Create Benchmarks

  • Creating benchmarks is critical in the ability to achieve each goal set. Just stating "I will earn $100,000 for my daughter's kidney surgery," is not measurable. Set measurable benchmarks along the way. Write down specific dates and amounts you will earn along the way. "I will increase my income by $10,000 per month and put $5,000 per month in a savings account." Now, you can see on a monthly basis whether you are achieving your goals.

Finding The Right Vehicle

  • Now that the purpose of the goal has been determined, the vehicle or way to accomplish the overall objective must be determined. The vehicle should be something that the goal setter has experience in or access to it. If the wrong route to your goal is chosen, the goal will not be attained nor will the purpose ever be achieved. Next to a lack of conviction in achieving a goal, choosing the wrong vehicle is the second most common reason in failures. If your goal is to write an e-book on goal setting, your plan might be to sell it for $100 and to make at least 100 sales.

Design A Daily Action Plan

  • The daily action plan reveals any holes in the benchmarks you have created. It also defines the daily steps which must be taken to reach the benchmarks and eventually achieve the goal within the time period set. It also allows you to make fast adjustments if you find any gaps you may not have seen when you wrote down the purpose of your goal. It is easier to make small daily course corrections than to miss your benchmarks.

Find Stimulating Pictures

  • While creating the daily action plan, find stimulating pictures that you can look at each day. If the goal is a long-term one, then use pictures which show progress toward the overall purpose in 3-, 5- or 10-year increments. Place the pictures in a goal journal, where you can readily review your goals, the purpose of each goal, see when you hit each benchmark and review your action plan on a daily basis.
