Cleaning Windows

Start with hot, soapy water. Chemical cleaners work well, but the same sparkling clean can be attained with dish detergent. Take your time rubbing down the windows to get rid of all the debris. Clean out the track and sides of the windows, too. Eliminating streaks depends on how fast you can dry the window. Use a clean terrycloth for the task. Keep it close at hand so that you can reach for it as soon as you are through cleaning.

Other Glass Products

Chrome, hard tiles and other glass products can be cleaned using this homemade formula. Mix one cup of rubbing alcohol with a tablespoon of vinegar. This solution evaporates quickly and ensures streak-free glass.

Clean cloudy glass with a mixture of ammonia and hot, soapy water. If that doesn't work, apply petroleum jelly to the affected area and allow it sit for a day or two. Wash it off. Denture cleaner also cleans cloudy glass. Remove lime deposits by soaking them in vinegar.

Shining Crystal

Fine crystal needs a gentle treatment to clean. Do not place it in the dishwasher; handle with rubber or cotton gloves. Avoid hot temperatures and abrasive cleaners because these will damage and etch the glass. Place a thick towel at the bottom of your sink, then fill it with warm to hot water. Add a mild detergent. Wash the crystal carefully, making sure all the grooves are washed. Rinse with water of the same temperature. Moving crystal from one extreme temperature to another will cause it to shatter. Remove films from the bottom of vases and decanters by filling them with a handful of rice and water mixed with lemon juice or vinegar. Allow to air dry, then shine with terrycloth for a streak-free finish.
