How to Stand Balloons Without Helium

Displaying a large amount of balloons at a party is expensive if you use helium to make them stand or float. This cost can cut into your budget, forcing you to reduce the amount of food or other decorations provided. Fortunately, you can display normal balloons and make them stand as if they were filled with helium. You only need a few inexpensive supplies to get started.

Things You'll Need

  • String

  • Fine Tooth Saw

  • Sand Or Gravel

  • Container

  • Thin Wooden Dowels Or Thick Wire

  • Wire Cutters

Step 1

Cut wooden dowels with a fine tooth saw to the height you want the balloons to stand. If using wire instead, bend one end of the wire in a circle perpendicular to the length of wire, forming a 1-inch diameter loop at the end of the wire. Use wire cutters to shape the loop, then cut the wire to the length you want.

Step 2

Inflate balloons with your mouth and tie the end in a knot as you normally would.

Step 3

Place a balloon next to the end of a wooden dowel and hold the two together with one hand. Wrap string around the knot of the balloon and dowel 4 or 5 times, and then tie a knot to keep them together. For wire do the same thing, except first rest the bottom of the balloon on the 1-inch diameter circle you made, letting the knot of the balloon hang through the circle. Pull the knot next to the wire and tie it to the wire with string.

Step 4

Place the wooden dowels or wired balloons together for the effect of a bunch of inflated balloons. If outside, push the ends into the ground to keep them standing on their own. If inside, slide the ends in a container filled with gravel or sand. You can cover the container if you wish to disguise it.

Tip

There are specially-made balloon sticks available at party supply stores that hold the bottom tip of the balloon. The sticks can be stuck in the ground or other decorative containers.
