Painting bubbles adds a light and whimsical effect to a painting. When painting bubbles, it's important to incorporate shadows, lightness and depth so that the bubble has a realistic look that appears to be reflecting a light source. While the concept isn't extremely difficult, you'll have to do more than make a circular object on a surface to paint a bubble. Painting bubbles can be done using a medium and some acrylic paint.

Place your example for your bubble next to your working surface. Add a dab of acrylic paint and medium on your painting plate. Dab a highlight color and a darker color that will serve as your shadow color on the plate as well.

Step 2

Dip your flat brush in the floating medium, blot it on a paper towel and then dip one corner of your brush into the acrylic paint. Blend the mixture on the paint plate. The medium will help give the acrylic paint depth as it is very thick.

Step 3

Hold your brush vertically, press down on your working surface, keep your brush flat and spin the flat brush around in a circle.

Step 4

Load one corner of your brush with the paint mixture, angle the brush and create a shadow on one side of your bubble. Accomplish a floating brush stroke by using a smooth, gliding stroke, to apply the shadow color The shadow should resemble a crescent shape and blend evenly from dark to light with each stroke. This will add depth to your bubble.

Step 5

Dip the nonbristle end of your brush into your highlight color, usually a light color like iridescent white, pink, or yellow, and dot the center of your bubble. This will add the effect that light is being reflected from the bubble.
