Nothing says costume party or Halloween like a witch's costume complete with an infamous, pointy hat. Create your very own, custom-made witch hat for a minimal cost and your child will be proud to wear the hat you created just for her. Older children can get in on the act and help out, too, while younger children can help by decorating the witch's hat when it's finished for a one-of-a-kind costume accessory.

Step 1

Draw a circle on the black poster board using a compass that is 10 or 12 inches in diameter and cut it out. This will be the brim of the hat.

Step 2

Measure the head circumference of the person who will be wearing the hat using tailor's measuring tape. Measure about 1/2- to 1-inch above the ears.

Step 3

Draw a second circle inside the brim circle using a compass, making it the circumference of the measurement of the wearer's head.

Step 4

Cut out the circle using a crafting knife. Alternatively, you can make a slit within the circle long enough to continue cutting out the rest of the circle with scissors.

Step 5

Draw another circle on the poster board that is approximately 6 inches larger than the brim --16 to 18 inches. This will be used to make the cone of the witch's hat.

Step 6

Draw a straight line from the edge of the circle to the center. Use scissors to cut along the line to make a slit.

Step 7

Form a cone out of the circle to fit inside the brim and staple it in place where the poster board overlaps.

Step 8

Glue the cone to the brim of the hat using a hot glue gun. Let the glue cool completely.

Step 9

Make the witch's hat a glittery head accessory by spraying it with black glitter spray paint. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.

Step 10

Draw a star on silver or gold wrapping paper and cut it out as a decoration. Put a dollop of glue on each point of the star and affix it to the cone of the witch's hat.

Step 11

Glue imitation black gemstones around the brim of the hat to make a witch's hat with flair. Skip this step if the hat is for a very young child.

Tip

Tape can be used in place of hot glue, but hot glue gives a more polished look and holds better. The hat in this article is a child’s size. Any size hat can be made. Just remember that the circle for the cone of the hat should always be approximately 6 inches larger than the circumference of the brim.

Warning

Adult supervision is a must with a hot glue gun, which can cause burns.
