DIY Face Scrub

Exfoliation leaves the skin looking and feeling incredible. The process of exfoliation makes skin softer and smoother with a healthy glow. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, dirt and debris by gently buffing them away, revealing the fresh, smooth skin beneath. This is particularly important for facial skin, as it aids in keeping the complexion clear and helps to prevent signs of premature aging. You can create your own facial scrub at home, with ingredients you can find in your kitchen cupboard.

Ingredients

Brown sugar is naturally antibacterial, therefore it helps to prevent blemishes. It is also a humectant, which means that it helps moisturize skin. White sugar granules gently exfoliate and scrub away the old layers of skin, and aid in elimination of pollutants and makeup. Olive oil helps bind the exfoliating particles in the scrub, and adds moisture to the skin. Essential oils are optional in this recipe, but can be added for fragrance and skin-enhancing purposes (for example, tea tree oil and lavender are good for clearing the skin, while vanilla or clove add a unique fragrance to the scrub).

Equipment

A small mixing bowl is used to mix ingredients. A measuring cup measures the appropriate amount of ingredients. Use a medicine dropper to measure the appropriate amount of essential oil should you decide to add essential oils to your scrub. A spoon or other stirring utensil helps blend the ingredients into a scrub. A clean, lidded container stores the scrub. Container ideas include lidded glass or plastic jars or old containers from commercially bought scrubs and lotions—just make sure the container can hold up to two cups of facial scrub. Certain containers with wider openings can be used for both mixing and storing your scrub.

Procedure

Measure 1 cup each of brown sugar and white table sugar, and pour these into the mixing bowl. Blend them using a spoon or other stirring utensil. Once combined, measure ¼ cup of olive oil and pour into the bowl with the sugar. Mix well. Fill a medicine dropper and add 20-30 drops of essential oil to the scrub, then mix (this step is optional). To store the scrub, carefully pour the mixture into a clean, lidded storage container. To use the face scrub, apply it with your fingertips and massage gently using small, circular motions. Make sure not to scrub your skin harshly, as that can damage your skin. Stir the scrub before each use as the sugars will settle and separate from the oil. Use within six months.
