Taking to the road as a trucker and seeing the long and dusty highways of the United States has been a fantasy of many aspiring haulers. That life is not for all of us, however, and a simulation is our next best bet. 18 Wheels of Steel: Haulin' is the latest installment in the 18 Wheels of Steel series. Returning fans will notice improved graphics and sound as well as a more cities and cargoes to haul.
Sleepy Trucker gets the Nap
As you start in your trucking career, you will be inexperienced, and the only way to gain experience is to get out on the open road. When on the road you will find that your driver will start yawning, which signifies he is sleepy. With a sleeper cab, you can pull off to the side of the road, hit the "n" key to stop the engine, and hit the advance time button to catch some sleep. Without a sleeper cab, you must pull off at a hotel to sleep. Once you're fully rested, you can get back on the road.
On the road, it is important to get to your destination as quickly as possible, as this gives you the most experience for your effort and opens up new opportunities. However, always be on the look out for John Law. If you go over the speed limit, swerve around on the roads, hit other vehicles or commit other traffic violations, it can end up costing you time and money. To avoid these penalties (if "The Man" is after you) find a wall or barricade you can put between yourself and the police car, and the police will have a difficult time getting around it. Another important consideration is steering. Remember, the faster you go, the more difficult time you will have steering where you want, taking far longer to make the turn than normal, so watch your speed.
Expanding the Company
As the game advances, you will need to buy additional trucks and hire additional drivers to make deliveries working under you. When you want to find a new driver for your business, go to a hotel. On the same page where you can buy a room for a night, you can also look for other drivers that are there as well. The major stipulation is that you can only hire drivers with fewer stars than you have.
