Having problems with your AOL email account can be frustrating, and sometimes, asking for help with a technical problem can be equally frustrating. However, there are a few simple things that you can do that might solve your issue. Check out a few basic but common problems that could be impairing your AOL email account.
Double-Check Your Password
Double-check your user ID and password. It sounds too simple, but sometimes, a user ID or password is accidentally deleted from a sign-in screen or prompt. If your computer is not sending the proper credentials to AOL, you will not be able to use your mailbox. If you have forgotten your password, reset your password with AOL’s password reset tool.
Check Your Computer
If your user ID and password are correct, make sure that your computer, modem and service provider are working properly. If one of those three is not functioning, you will not be able to send or receive email. If you can verify that your computer and modem are working, contact your ISP to make sure that they are not experiencing service outages in your area.
Make sure your browser is set to the proper security level and/or allows your computer to accept cookies from AOL. In Internet Explorer, select "Tools" from the menu bar and "Internet Options" from the drop-down list. When Explorer displays the Internet Options window, click the "Security" tab. On the "Security" tab, click the "Default Level" button and click "OK."
In Mozilla Firefox, select "Tools" from the menu bar and "Options" from the drop-down list. When Firefox displays the Options window, select "Accept Cookies From Sites" and click "OK."
In Safari, click "Safari" and select Preferences from the drop-down list. When Safari displays the General window, select the "Security" tab. On the "Security" tab, select "Enable Java Script" in the Web Content section, select "Always" in the Accept Cookies section, and click the red dot in the upper left corner to accept the changes.
Check Your Version
Make sure that you are using a current version of AOL. Times change, and software changes with it. If you are using an old version of AOL, it may not work with your current operating system or some of the service updates you periodically receive from your operating system’s manufacturer.
