What to Do With the Unused Space Under a Deck?

While a deck is a great addition to your home, it also leave a lot of unused space underneath. There are several options you can use to use this space. Under-deck space is useful in many ways and also convenient because it is in an untraveled area and won't be in the way of anything else you have going on in your yard and deck area.

  • The space under your deck is ideal for storing items to protect or just to get them out of the way. From children's toys to lawn equipment it is a simple matter to attach a tarp underneath the deck to protect the items from the weather and slide the items underneath. You can easily close in the space and place a door somewhere so that you can easily access your stored items. Applying a layer of gravel will keep the area neat and dry.

Children's Clubhouse

  • Children are always looking for a place to call their own, helping them turn the area under the deck into a clubhouse is a fun weekend project for everyone. You can make tunnels and use tarps, old lawn furniture and even move a toy box under the deck for the kids to enjoy. You may not want to use gravel when children will be crawling around so you can either leave the ground natural or add a layer of sand.

Plant Protection

  • When starting plants from seed they need, an area that is protected from strong winds and direct sunlight. When it gets cold, potted plants need the same sort of protection.
Under a deck is a good area for this. You can place a shelf or table underneath the deck to store the plants in times when they need to be shielded but not necessarily inside.
