Hair Color Regrowth Tips

Save

Coloring your hair requires time and commitment. You may need to have your hair colored periodically to cover up the regrowth of your natural color at the roots. You may find yourself in a situation where you do not have time to return to the salon to manage your visible regrowth. You can take steps at home to minimize the appearance of this regrowth.

Choose Your Color Appropriately

  • If you plan to get an all-over hair color, you should choose one that is only two or three shades away from your natural hair color. This will minimize the contrast between the colored hair and the regrowth of your natural hair color at the roots. Adding highlights and lowlights can help to disguise root regrowth, since your hair will have multiple shades of color in it.

At-home Touch Ups

  • If you do pick an all-over hair color with a single shade, you can touch up your roots at home yourself. There are kits made especially for adding color to your roots at home. You can find them at any store that sells at-home hair color, such as drugstores and grocery stores. Touching up your roots at home will disguise the regrowth of your natural hair color, and it also will save you some money. The cost savings comes from being able to extend the time between trips to the salon to get your hair colored.

Camouflage

  • Another option for dealing with hair color regrowth is camouflage. This works well with highlighted hair, but is also an option if you do not feel comfortable using at-home root touch-up kits. To camouflage root regrowth, simply wear your hair slicked back away from your face. Place a wide headband or a folded scarf across your head, positioning it to cover the roots that will show at the front of your head. You may leave your hair loose behind the headband or scarf, or put your hair in a low ponytail, bun, or braid. Mainly, you want to cover up your roots in the front. Do not put your hair in a high ponytail, as this will expose the root regrowth at the edges of your hair in the back and on the sides. You may also choose to wear a hat to hide your root regrowth. Camouflaging hair color regrowth is the fastest and easiest way to deal with visible roots until you can get to the salon.
