Use organic essential oils for purity.

    Freshening

  1. Use citrus essential oils to freshen stale air or to neutralize cooking odors. The website, Wavelengths Natural Health, offers a deodorizing recipe with essential oils that cleanse the air. Combine 10 drops each of lemon and orange essential oils with 7 drops of grapefruit, 3 drops of cypress and 2 drops of peppermint essential oils. Diffuse for five minutes in a humidifier. Place a few drops on a cotton wash cloth to keep drawers and luggage fresh.
  2. Disinfecting

  3. Rosemary essential oil is an effective disinfectant and a deodorizer. The Herbs Place website provides a simple rosemary-based room deodorizer. Blend 6 drops each of rosemary and grapefruit essential oils, and 4 drops of lemon essential oil. Add the oil blend to 2 oz. of steam-distilled water in a dark glass spray bottle. Shake before spraying as desired. Store in a cool dark place.
  4. Antibacterial

  5. Take advantage of tea tree oil's antibacterial properties during cold and flu season. Diffuse a blend of 4 drops each tea tree, lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus organic essential oils. According to the Healthy Oil Planet website, use the blend undiluted or mixed with a carrier oil, such a jojoba oil.
