Ringworm, also known as tinea, is caused by a fungal infection. It is not the result of a worm, but rather named after the circular worm-like pattern that it leaves on the skin. It will often appear as several itchy red patches on the skin and can affect the head, body, groin area and feet. When ringworm appears on the feet, it is commonly referred to as athlete's foot. In the groin area it is called jock itch. It is very contagious and can easily be passed from person to person. Animals can also contract ringworm.

    Home Treatment

  1. Ringworm is normally easy to care for at home. By keeping the infected area dry and clean and applying an over-the-counter anti-fungal medication, ringworm signs usually disappear within a month.
  2. Resistant Ringworm

  3. Ringworm is considered resistant when it does not disappear after a month of home treatment. In this case a trip to the doctor may be necessary.

A doctor may prescribe anti-fungal medications. These medications could include oral medication in the form of pills or anti-fungal skin medications.

The medications prescribed by the doctor will be stronger than those available over-the-counter. Oral griseofulvin is commonly prescribed if oral medication is deemed necessary. Ketoconazole is an example of a prescription anti-fungal skin medication. For ringworm which has infected nails, a six-week course of medication may be necessary. Oral terbinafine is prescribed for nail infections.

Antibacterial medication may be prescribed if a bacterial infection is present. Contact your doctor right away if you see signs of a bacterial infection. These are often caused by itching the fungal infection.

Follow your doctor's treatment plan carefully. Complete the full course of treatment. If the full course is not completed, the infection may reoccur.
  4. Environment

  5. Kill ringworm spores by cleaning linens in hot water. Disinfect showers and tubs. Treat any infected animals.
