If you have had asthma for a while then you are pretty familiar with an inhaler. If you have just been diagnosed with asthma and are told to use an inhaler, you may want to know a few things about using the inhaler properly and getting the best from it. To get the most out of the medicine from an inhaler, you will need to know the proper way to use it. If you are not using the inhaler properly, you will not be getting enough of the medicine that your lungs need.

    Metered Dose Inhaler

  1. If this is the first-time use of the inhaler, you will need to prepare it by shaking it for five seconds; then release the medicine by pressing down on the canister with your index finger. Turn away from your face and press down three times. Inhale through your mouth instead of your nose when taking in the medication.

While pressing down on the canister, take a slow deep breath at the same time to ensure you are getting the medication. After inhaling the medication, rinse your mouth out with water to prevent any chance of a fungal infection developing.
  2. Dry Powder Inhaler

  3. The dry powder inhaler contains a dry powder that may be ideal for someone who can't time the breathing and the pressing of the canister of the metered dose inhaler. Breathe out slowly as much air as you can without the inhaler in your mouth. Place the inhaler in your mouth between your teeth and close your lips tightly around it.

Take the inhaler out of your mouth and take a long deep breath, holding it for at least 10 seconds. Now you can breathe out slowly.
  4. Cleaning Your Inhaler

  5. On the metered dose inhaler, remove the canister and the cap from the inhaler. Run warm water through the bottom and top of the mouthpiece for a good minute. Shake the water off the inhaler and let air dry.

On the dry powder inhaler, you will not use the same procedure as that of the metered dose inhaler, as the powder inhaler should not be washed with water. Take a clean, dry cloth and gently clean around the mouthpiece. This should be done once or twice a week.
  6. Troubleshooting

  7. If your inhaler is not working properly, you may want to check a few of these things. Make sure the cap is off the inhaler. Check the canister for medication. The canister may be empty and need to be replenished.

Make sure you are inhaling through your mouth and not your nose. If using the metered dose inhaler, make sure you are inhaling and pressing the canister at the same time.
