Different Ways to Wear a Sarong

A sarong is one of the most versatile wardrobe pieces you can own. It can be worn as a skirt, dress, shawl, scarf, or swimsuit cover-up. The possibilities are limitless when creating sarong ensembles, provided that you know the basic rules for wearing one.

    Tying the Sarong

  1. The key to wearing a sarong in any style is to make sure it is tied securely. A strong knot can save you much potential embarrassment. Leave enough fabric loose on each end to tie the sarong using a simple double knot. If your tying ends are too short for a double knot, the knot might come undone when the short ends wiggle themselves free.

Be sure to tie the knot somewhere on your body that does not move too much so that your sarong will stay secure. When wearing your sarong as a head scarf, tie it at the base of your neck. When creating a dress, look for ways to wrap the sarong so that it ties directly under your arms, around your neck, or even at your waist. Think of areas where your clothing usually comes together, and attempt to tie the sarong at one of those areas. Twisting the ends of the sarong before you tie them will make your knot more secure.
  2. Wrapping the Sarong

  3. Wrap the sarong securely to avoid exposing too much skin. Begin with the middle of the sarong over the center of the front or back of your body to make sure it is covered. Areas where the ends of the sarong meet are more likely to be exposed. Choosing a sarong that is long enough to wrap around your body more than one time is another way to get appropriate coverage.
  4. Specific Ideas

  5. To create a halter dress, hold the sarong so that it is centered across your back. Bring the top corners around your chest and twist them across one another once, leaving plenty of fabric free to tie. This twisting technique will hold the front of the sarong closed while creating straps for the halter. Wrap the straps around your neck and tie them at the back. Ensure the ends are tied securely enough to keep the sarong on, but loose enough to be comfortable.

For a front-tie dress, begin with the center of the sarong in front of you, and wrap it around your body by taking it under your arms and crossing it in the back. Bring the ends around the front of your body, and tie them securely at your waist. Ensure that the sarong is wrapped tightly enough that it does not slip down when you move. As a modification of this style, you can tie the ends around the top of your chest instead of your waist.
