Homemade Facial Treatments

Create an at-home spa by making your own facial treatments. Homemade skin masks not only save you from buy expensive cosmetic products they also allow you to tailor them to your skin type. Dry, oily and combination skin are generally the result of weather changes, stress, hormones or poor diet. Find out how you can treat your skin and produce an atmosphere conducive to relaxing.

Dry Skin

Dry skin may be the result of cold weather or hot air from heaters. You can also dry out your skin by getting too much sun. Dry skin tends to flake off and cause itchiness. The skin needs moisture to be able to maintain flexibility and keep wrinkles at bay. Moisturizers seal your skin and prevent water leaving the cells. Make your own homemade moisturizing mask by mixing 1 tbsp. of yogurt with 1 tbsp. of honey. The milk from the yogurt will soothe dry skin and bring back moisture. Be sure to apply the mask to a clean face. Use a cleanser that doesn't contain a strong detergent that will dry out the skin. Look for cleansers with coconut oil. Keep the mask on for 15 minutes and wash. Avoid using this mask if you have a milk allergy.

Oily Skin

Skin produces excess oil, or sebum, because of changes in hormones or hereditary factors. Determine if you have oily skin by seeing if it is shiny or broken out. Wash your skin with a cleanser with a powerful detergent that contains sodium laurlyn sulfate. Make your own exfoliating mask to get rid of dead skin cells that may be blocking pores, thus sealing in oil. Mix 2 tbsp. of oatmeal with 1 tsp. of soda water. The consistency can be altered if the mixture is too dry to rub or too wet to stay on the face. Lightly rub in slow, circular motions. Wash after one minute. The oatmeal is both gentle enough not to harm skin, yet will remove the dead cells. Make a toner to refresh the skin by pureeing one cucumber. Strain the cucumber with a sieve and add 1 tsp. of honey. Store in the refrigerator. Spread a light coat on skin and allow to air dry. The cucumber will provide moisture to the skin without causing a breakout.

Combination Skin

Combination skin usually has both dry and oily areas. The glands around the nose forehead and chin are typically the regions that produce the most oil, though it is different in each individual. Use any of the above treatments or a combination of both to treat these areas.

Normal Skin

Normal skin is somewhat of a generic term to describe a person's skin that doesn't have any major skin problems like acne or eczema. However, normal skin is still susceptible to getting fine lines and wrinkles. Treat your skin to a wrinkle mask by mashing 1/4 banana with 1 tbsp. honey. Apply the mask to clean skin for 10 minutes before washing. Bananas provide the skin with nutrients like potassium, zinc, vitamin A and magnesium, which is good for restoring skin cells. You can add yogurt, avocado, wheat germ or vitamin E oil to this mixture.

Spa Setting

Turn down the lights or light candles. Find music that is soothing or reminds you of a favorite place. Drink lots of water to flush out toxins. Add cucumbers or lemon to the water to contribute to the spa-like atmosphere. Soak in a warm bath with the mask of your choosing. Get the break you need and some beneficial skin care.
