High Protein Diet & Pancreatitis

Save

Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas. During digestion, the pancreas produces enzymes that help break down fat, carbohydrates and protein. While pancreatitis affects people for reasons such as chronic alcohol consumption, high fat and protein meals also cause pancreatitis. To reduce symptoms of pancreatitis, a healthy diet and regular exercise are recommended.

Yogurt

To avoid pancreatitis due to a high-protein diet, add probiotics such as yogurt into one or two meals a day. The bacteria found in yogurt helps to boost immunity, regulate digestion and reduce inflammation. Those who suffer occasional bouts of pancreatitis benefit from eating yogurt for its soothing and healing ingredients. Look for yogurt that contains Lactobacillus acidophilus in grocery or health food stores.

Vegetables

Like fruit, vegetables are healthy to eat for a variety of ailments due to their quantity of vitamins, minerals and fiber. Spinach contains high levels of vitamin B and iron, both of which help to reduce symptoms of pancreatitis. Soups with tomato broth are beneficial, since the antioxidants found in tomatoes heal the pancreas. Other vegetables to eat to reduce symptoms include squash, bell peppers and kale.

Antioxidants

To offset damage to the pancreas from high-protein quantities, incorporate antioxidants into your daily diet to help provide the body fight damaging free radicals. Blueberries, cherries and grapes are a quality source of antioxidants and should be eaten regularly to reap benefits.

Refrain from eating a diet high in protein, fat and carbohydrates and instead eat large servings of fruits and vegetables each day for optimal health and functioning of your pancreas.

What to avoid

When suffering from pancreatitis, it is important to refrain from red meat, refined grains, pastas and white sugar. In addition, limit the amount of trans fats you consume through baked goods and fried or processed foods. A high-protein diet is not healthy for the pancreas, so limit meat to cold-water fish and incorporate tofu or beans to provide protein to the diet.

Avoid alcohol, smoking and caffeinated beverages to prevent symptoms of pancreatitis.
