Woodworking Projects for Girls

Save

Woodworking is a hobby that people of any age can pick up. Projects range from the very simple to the very difficult. Children even enjoy woodworking projects. Do not mistake woodworking as a hobby only for boys. Girls enjoy working with their hands and working with the wood as well as boys. Work together with your little girl and see how much fun you both have.

Bookends

  • Bookends are a great project for girls who own a lot of books. Bookends keep their books organized and in good condition. This project is very simple even for the youngest of girls.

Buy 4 pieces of pine that measure 6 inches by 8 inches. Sand them till they are smooth. Allow her to paint any design or picture on them she wants. Let the paint dry completely.

Spray all the pieces with a clear coat to protect the paint job. Do one side at a time and allow it to dry thoroughly before turning over to do the other side.

Lay one of the pieces on a flat surface. Stand another piece on its end and butt it up against the piece lying down. Use nails to hammer the two pieces together. Depending on her age, the girl may need help with the hammering part.

Set the ends on a shelf and put books in between.

Birdhouse

  • A birdhouse is a project that is a little more difficult, but they do come in kits. Take her shopping and allow her to pick out whatever birdhouse kit she likes. Follow the directions that come with the kit to build a wooden birdhouse.

Dollhouse

  • Dollhouse projects require a kit unless you know someone with excellent design skills. This may seem like a huge project to work on and may take some time. There are simple dollhouses and very intricate dollhouses. Buy a dollhouse that is age-level appropriate. Do not buy an intricate plan for a five-year-old. Buy something that will go together in a reasonable amount of time. Girls who are a little older and a little more patient can handle the more complicated houses. Read through all the directions that come with the dollhouse kit with your little girl before starting the project.

Jewelry Box

  • A jewelry box is a very simple design to make. Help your girl design her own jewelry box. Take some measurements and cut out the pieces of wood to those measurements. Add hinges so the box opens and closes easily. Stain the box with a polyurethane stain to protect the wood.
